Philipp Pattberg

Philipp Pattberg is an Associate Professor for Transnational Environmental Governance at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the VU University Amsterdam. He is currently serving as Management Committee Chair of the European COST Action “The Transformation of Global Environmental Governance” and deputy-director and research coordinator of the international Global Governance Project, a joint research program of leading European universities. Within the Netherlands Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE), Philipp coordinates the research cluster on global environmental governance and politics.

Before joining the IVM, Philipp Pattberg has been teaching undergraduate and graduate classes at the Free University of Berlin and the Free University of Amsterdam. Since 2006, Philipp acts as the academic director of a series of PhD training school on Global Environmental Change. Philipp is also teaching graduate-level courses in International Relations and Global Environmental Politics at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, VU University Amsterdam.

Philipp holds a MA in Political Science, German Literature and Modern History from the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universität Bonn (highest category), a postgraduate Diploma in International Relations from the Bologna Center of the Paul H. Nitze School of International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University, and a PhD (summa cum laude) from the Freie Universität Berlin.

Philipp was visiting full professor at the Department of Political Science, TU Darmstadt (2009), visiting professor at American University, Washington DC (2009), and visiting professor at SciencesPo Bordeaux (2007).

His current research focuses on the concept of transnational organisation, the overall architecture of global governance, the effectiveness and accountability of global public policy partnerships, the future of the global climate regime and the challenge of modeling governance and institutions.

Philipp Pattberg has published articles in Annual Review of Environment and Resources, Business and Society Review, European Journal of International Relations, Global Environmental Politics, Governance, Global Governance, International Environmental Agreements, International Studies Review, Journal of Environment & Development, Leviathan, Journal of Political Ecology, Politische Vierteljahresschrift (PVS), and Third World Quarterly, among others. He is the author of Private Institutions and Global Governance. The New Politics of Environmental Sustainability (Edward Elgar Publishing) and co-editor of Global Climate Governance beyond 2012: Architecture, Agency and Adaptation (Cambridge University Press). Together with Michele Betsill and Eleni Dellas, Philipp is the guest editor of a special issue for International Environmental Agreements, titled “Agency in Earth System Governance: Refining a Research Agenda.”

Philipp was awarded the 2009 Science Prize of the German Political Science Association (DVPW).
